Way-Out Wednesday: Art & Soul

Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday!

Photobucket

Every once in a while I like to take a break from spotlighting vintage and focus on the handmade/artsy folk, the ones that create something that "moves me" in some way, shape or form. (That sounds cheesy, I know. Work with me and my corniness here, people.)

Today I'm showing original prints from Mari Lowery Photography, all available for super decent prices on Etsy. She takes photos of things in her neighborhood in New York like old store window displays, front yards, kitschy things at Coney Island. You know, pretty random stuff. But it works because of the vintage vibe in her shots: the 50's-esque, grainy and watery colors combined with this sort of underlying dark and slightly creepy edge. Perfect for Way-Out Wednesday! Here are a few of her prints currently available for sale~

Way-Out Wednesday: Slink Down The Alley, Looking For A Fight

Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday!

Photobucket

When you're having a rather craptacular day, the kind that not even your pool boy from a Scandinavian country, a whole bottle of Xanax, and/or a cocktail or 3 can fix, I find that this helps:

Photobucket

Now, on any other day I'd think "sure, it's a cute print, aqua & pink, awesome" and move on, not even paying close attention to their faces. But today was different. Something about this print made me linger a second longer and then I realised why I liked this print so much: the prospect of cats- not quite right cats, somewhat mentally unstable cats, cats with issues, reeeally angry cats- somehow is more entertaining today than anything my friend Jack Daniels could muster. Angry cats, with a side of theatrics. Cats that'll scratch your face off, man...right after they finish reenacting a dance number and the "gettin' cut" scene from West Side Story.

Prints Charming Sunday: That Train Keeps A-Rollin'

Welcome to Prints Charming Sunday!

First, a quick announcement: this week I'll be rolling out new banners to use for our weekly themes (ie: Prints Charming Sundays & Way-Out Wednesdays). I've grown kinda bored of the ones I use now every week, so in the words of those damn Brady kids: "when its time to change, you've got to rearrange." Also: "sha na na na na na na na na, sha na na na na." (Got that song stuck in your head now? Ha! That's my gift to you.)

A second quick announcement (sorry! but it's a good one!): Stay tuned for the Vintage Giveaway this week! I've raced past 300 followers (you guys RULE), so as promised this week I'll be giving away something vintage and PINK from my very own collection!

On to Prints Charming Sunday!

Today's vintage novelty print pick is this Vintage 50's Train Ticket Print Skirt, available on Etsy from seller TMHL:

Photobucket

Cuuute! I've got a real "thing" for 50's skirts. As in, I hoard them. (In fact, I've bought them from some of you vintage sellers before!) The *only* reason I'm sharing this skirt with you all and not snatching it up for my own greedy self is because it's got a 24" waist. Siiigh. It'd take me another 4 months of hardcore work to get to that size and frankly, I'm sick to death of dieting and exercise, so this 26" waist is the best it's gonna get... unless I get a second wind to keep losing weight. Or get a tapeworm. Or half my ass gets cut off in a freak farm equipment accident. And since none of those is likely to happen, you teeny gals will have to fight to the death for it. Ready? Go.

Aqua Blue Heaven Friday: Iced Key

Welcome to Aqua Blue Heaven Friday! A very steamy, muggy and all-around grody friday. (And yes, I *did* just say "grody" because apparently it's 1985.)

Photobucket

Today's aqua deliciousness is this interesting set of Vintage 60's Keyhole Design Glasses:

Photobucket

Yep, keyholes! Cool, right? Never saw that design before (as far as vintage glassware goes, I mean). I wonder what the inspiration was for these back in the day? All's I know is that they rock pretty hard. But if aqua's not your bag, the seller also has yellow and green ones for sale. Score! (If I wasn't overrun with vintage glassware already, I'd buy them all and do a little mixy-matchy action.) See?:

Perfect for summer lemondade. Or iced tea. Or pink squirrels. Whatever. All glasses currently available on Etsy from seller Molly's Closet.

Way-Out Wednesday: No Country For Old Dolls.

Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday!

Photobucket

Given the ridonkulous heat my fellow northeasterners have to endure, and the flooding of you midwesterners and, like, the fire that's probably going on somewhere in California right now, I thought I'd reward you all with a special Way-Out Wednesday treat. A doll. One "holy hell that is one creepy-ass doll" doll.

Behold:

Photobucket

No, your eyes don't deceive you. That is a girl doll. With an extreme disproportionate face-to-noggin-size ratio. That looks mildly retarded. And somehow old. And bald. Even Prince Charming looks like he'd rather bludgeon himself with a lute than have to kiss The Thing That Fire Wouldn't Kill.

I mean really:

Photobucket

It's terrifying and questionable and wrong and disturbing and because of those things, is totally right in my book.

Vintage 50's Tiny Doll (did I mention it's only 3 inches tall?! Because it is. Why so small? Good God, what purpose does that serve?!) available on Etsy from seller Covetable Curiosities. (I strongly suggest you check out their store- it's chock full of cool, vintage trinkets & teeny plastic bits and interesting whatnots. Like more dolls like this gem. You're welcome.)

Party Like It's 1776!

I know it's been said a million times already today in blogland, but let me be the millionth and one to say Happy 4th of July, America! May you all be as happy as possible with your dysfunctional family & friends, have a belly full of hot dogs & cold beer, and careful not to shoot your eye out with those bottle rockets, black mambas, ballbusters and cherry bombs. Have a great day, all!

Prints Charming Sunday: 3 Cheers For Red, White & Blue!

Welcome to a special holiday edition of Prints Charming Sunday!

Photobucket

Being as though it's the 4th of July here in the US, I figured it only fitting to make today's theme even more, you know, theme-ier. Red, white & blue-ier, even! (And you know, even if you're not in the US of A, there are plenty of other countries that have red, white & blue flags, like my mates in Australia & the UK! Luxembourg
and Norway! And even exciting and exotic destinations like...Cambodia.)

Enjoy the patriotic display-o-frocks and have a fantastic day no matter where you are, kids!
