Halloween Friday: Sympathy For The Devil
Welcome to the second to last Halloween Friday! The theme for the day is the devil. Before you get all: "Say what now, girlfriend?!"- (and I'm almost 47% sure you would never even say something like that to begin with, but let's just go with it, for art's sake)- I've got 'splainin' to do. I realise that the devil probably isn't exactly the first thing to come to mind when thinking of Halloween, but the way I sees it, when will it ever be apropos of me to show off vintage devils as a theme? National Glaucoma Awareness Month? Leif Erikson Day? International Sword Swallowers Week? World Leprosy Day? While I may celebrate each of those events in my own special way, including but not limited to: getting my eyebrows waxed, yelling at the teenagers to get off my lawn, and/or eating a pint of Ben and Jerry's in one sitting while watching a Laverne & Shirley marathon, there just is no real outlet for a devil theme, is the point I'm trying to get to, rather unsuccessfully.
So enjoy this devil theme, and let me be the first to say "Happy Sarcasm Awareness Month!" And yes, naysayers, it's a real thing. Like I'd make that up.
Winky Devil Box Purse. Each purse is one of a kind and made from upcycled materials, and I know you greenies appreciate that.
Agorables Devil Boy Wallet. Ok, if you've never seen Agorables stuff, click the link to go to the Agorables' etsy store to see more stuff. It's sort of like a mashup of Emily Strange and Happy Bunny. Crude, vulgar and really funny. If you're into that sort of thing.
Vintage 50's/60's Devil Hand Towels.
Vintage 50's/60's Devil Pixie Knee-Hugger. I know there are TONS of people who collect these so if you're one of 'em, you should grab this guy, if for no other reason than because it looks like he just scarfed down a bag of Cheetos.
Vintage 50's Rockabilly Devil Earrings. Handlebar mustachio? Instant win.
If I was to dress up as a devil this Halloween, there's no way in HELL (ha! get it?) I'd go the Sexy Slutty Naughty Vampy Devil Girl route. That whole schtick makes me want to bitch slap any female who does. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for showin' it if you got it, but there's a fine line between sexy and "dead hooker in the trunk of a car". However, if I was to dress up, I'd put a spin on the devil costume and rock it up with some apropos vintage pieces, such as these 2 things:
Vintage 40's Sculptural Devilish Hat
and
Victorian-Influenced Vintage Button-Up Boots.

Way-Out Wednesday: Let's Play A Game of....BRAINS...
Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday! In keeping with the Halloween spirit and admiring many an Etsy chick with mad craftacular skillz, I found something that is not only creative but a little odd, in the best way, of course. There is a seller called P's and Q's who makes checkerboards from upcycled wood and hand-painted, unique checkerboard pieces. You won't find the standard plastic black and red circle pieces (like the uber craptastic set I have), nay, she makes her pieces into the shapes of mummies and vampires and even, dare I say, Sasquatches. Because it's like I always never say: "A girl cannot live without a checkerboard set of Sasquatches."
And so, behold her sets of wonder and joy! Perfect for that rare combo of Horror Fan and Super Nerd:
This is what a whole set would look like, including the board. What a swell and creative idea, right? I'd probably end up half-assing it, give up after painting 1/2 of one, get frustrated and end up throwing it outside into the street. But then, I have a little problem with "anger management", apparently.
Vampires Vs. Mummies!
But wait! There's more...
Yettis Vs. Sasquatches (Also, I'm not sure how to spell the plural of "yeti". Stupid spellcheck offered me nothing. That jerk.)
Aliens Vs. Robots
And yes, even Zombies Vs. Angry Townspeople

Everybody Scream, Everybody Scream! In Our Town Of Halloween...
(Yes, those are part of the lyrics to "This is Halloween" from Nightmare Before Christmas, one of my top 3 favorite Tim Burton flicks. LOVE.)
With Halloween coming closer, I thought you'd dig some vintage Halloween pics, just for fun! I apologise for today's image-heaviness, but these next 10 pics are fun, in a "clowns are never fun" kind of way. (Some of the pics are pretty big, but some are stupidly small, so hopefully the even balance won't make your computer have a seizure.)
The photos were taken in September of 1960 by photographer George Silk of kids in Connecticut and were published in the October 31, 1960 Halloween edition of Life magazine.

Prints Charming Sunday: 99 Red Balloons
Welcome to the second ever Prints Charming Sunday! In case you missed the first one last week, Prints Charming Sunday showcases a different novelty print each week, usually from the 1940s or 1950s. Since I don't normally blog on weekends- mostly due to slackery and lazetude-I think this is a quick and easy way to pop in and out. No strings, no commitments, and I won't call you in the morning. Everyone wins!
Today's novelty print is from Calendar Girl Clothing, this amazing Vintage 50's Hot Air Balloon Dress.
(I bet you have "99 Red Balloons" stuck in your head now, don't you? Oh, don't worry. You will. It shows up when you least expect it.)
