Way-Out Wednesday: Salt And Pepa's Here, And We're In Effect

Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday!

Photobucket

I've been pretty MIA around here and I apologise for the skimpy posts lately. Hey, it's summer. It happens. (I'll probably be rockin' the skimpy posts for a while, just so's you know. At least, until I get sick of summer, which should be any day now.) I've got many projects up in the air right now-the "big one" includes a vintage sweater, me and a book--that's all I can say for now, without jinxing the whole damn thing. Sorry to be a tease, but-- mwuahahaha! So please bear with me over the next month or 2 of lameness, okay? Okay, dammit.

Do you remember how in last week's post I said how much I'm loving vintage things-that-hold-other-things? (AKA: The Daisy Pin of Doom -or- the Poison Pin?) Well I found me another thing-that-cleverly-disguises-another-thing...oh man, is it strange and great...

Not poison but...

Photobucket

...Salt and pepper! Because the lack of proper food flavoring is a growing concern in these hard times of ours. Look how fun-- they're lanterns!...that just happen to hold salt and pepper. (Why? Who the hell knows why they're shaped like lanterns? Because, that's why!)

Vintage Lantern-Shaped Salt & Pepper Lucite Earrings are currently available on Etsy from seller Studio Stebby Lee!

Prints Charming Sunday: Whoa, Daddy!

Welcome to a special Father's Day edition of Prints Charming Sunday!

Photobucket

What does every dad need? Yep. More ties. (Like he needs another hole in the head!) They're a Father's Day requirement! So here's a handful of some of my favorite vintage 40's & 50's ties with crazy cool prints that I found on Etsy from various sellers. Did you all remember Dad today? Did you call? Send a card? Mow the lawn? Just because Father's Day is pretty much over, doesn't mean you still can't surprise the man in your life with a kickass tie in the future. Better late than never! (That's years of Catholic guilt talking right there!)

Photobucket

Vintage 40's Horse Racing Handpainted Silk Tie, available from seller Goodlookin.

Photobucket

Vintage 40's Palm Tree Tie, available from seller Art Deco Dame.

Photobucket

Vintage 40's/50's Oil Wells Handpainted Tie, currently available from seller Rollout Cowboy.

Photobucket

Vintage 50's Spiderweb Tie, currently available from seller Fabs Gabs Vintage.

Wishing all you brothers, uncles, dads, grandfathers, teachers and any other menfolk who play a positive part in a kid's life a very rockin' Father's Day!

Way-Out Wednesday: Pretty Poison

Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday!

Photobucket

Today's vintage pick for Way-Out Wednesday isn't weird, strange or a creepy-ass clown or doll. But it's pretty damn cool and something I didn't realise I would neeeeed until I saw it. And now I love things... that hide other things. Secret compartments! I guess some 'splainin' is in order. You guys know what poison rings are, right? (Think: the way medieval Tony Soprano-style goons got, well, medieval on their enemies' asses and "bumped them off" by slipping 'em a mickey that was cleverly hidden in their ring?) Well, how's about a poison brooch?!...

Photobucket

It's disguised as an unobvious and dainty lil daisy and you're all like "whatever, daisy pin". But wait! It's not sweet and harmless. It's a poison daisy! And that, my friends, is fantastic.

Photobucket

See? Poison time! I suppose the conventional and sappy thing to do would be to keep a picture of your sweetie pie in there, or a lock of hair ... but who wants that? I prefer the noir-y dramatics of imagining some jilted lover bumping off her two-timin' man! (What? Is that wrong?)

The Vintage Daisy Poison Pin of Doom (ok, FINE, picture holder) is currently available for $8 (!) on Etsy from seller Denisebrain. Knock 3 times, ask for Maggie, then tell her Little Red sent you to "take care of the ol' ball and chain." She'll hook you up.

Prints Charming Sunday: A Beautiful Bunch O' Ripe Banana!

Welcome to Prints Charming Sunday!

Photobucket

When you hear Harry Belafonte belt out that very first "Daaaay-O!", don't you guys *instantly* think of the dinner party scene in Beetlejuice? You know, this one?

Photobucket

You should, if you're a retro pop culture/80's movie nerd like myself! Why did I ask such a random and seemingly pointless question, you wonder? (Have you not yet realised that there's always a (albeit cheesy) connection with the day's theme to my seemingly pointless and rambling thoughts? It's the new genius, people.) So when I first laid eyes upon today's vintage novelty print, I heard Harry in my head. And then I thought of Beetlejuice. And then I thought "damn, this is cool", in that precise order.

Photobucket

Photobucket

See? "Daaay-O!" It's really cool and uber awesome for summer, no? This Vintage 50's Calypso Novelty Print Skirt is currently available for a mere 58 bucks and in a very wearable 29" waist from seller Crafty Crow Vintage.

Aqua Blue Heaven Friday: Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em!...Or Not.

Welcome to Aqua Blue Heaven Friday!

Photobucket

A little over 3 months ago I began a whole body transformation, inside and out. I'm planning on writing a full post about it soon, so I'll just give you a quickie rundown: I started going to the gym regularly, completely overhauled my diet to the point of being a part-time vegetarian (lay off me PETA jerks), no alcohol (I know, I know! I can only joke about being drunk all the time--hey! I'm like Dean Martin now!) and I quit smoking for good. Naturally, of all the things I changed in my life, that was the hardest. Now if only I could get off crack, my transformation will be complete. (I'm kidding, people! Sheesh. I meant to say meth.)

So suffice it to say, when I found today's vintage pick of this Vintage Leather Wallet, Lighter & Cigarette Case Set for sale on Etsy, my heart wept. In my "smoking days" I would've been all over this set, but it's juuust not the same using a cigarette case to hold your tampons and crack pipe.

Photobucket

Isn't it a great set?! It's one of those things that you didn't know you had to have until you saw another gal pull it out of her vintage purse and then you'd covet the hell out of it. At least, *I* would! Plus the set is new old stock and has never been used! Waaaant it. Oh well. Back my rice cakes.

Way-Out Wednesday: God Save The Keane

Welcome to Way-Out Wednesday!

Photobucket

Many moons ago I expressed my love/hate relationship with vintage Keane paintings. (You know the ones: the big-eyed street urchins, usually dirty and/or barefoot, standing alone in an alley? Yeah, those cheerful ones.) While I do love the kitsch factor of them, (and you KNOW I generally love sad/grumpy/murderous-looking things), I just can't wrap my head around the borderline-suicidal, extreme sad factor of them. So what a great surprise it was to find not a bona fide Keane, but a fantastic knockoff. May I present this Vintage Paint-By-Numbers Painting, currently available on Etsy from seller Arctic Timberwolf, who, incidentally, sells nothing but big-eyed things, so it's your lucky day if Keane makes you randy...

Photobucket

Why so sad, street urchin? Is it because you have tears made of flesh, for some reason? Is it because the nuclear blast that has obviously burned your face off has also disfigured your butterfly turning it into a giant mutant freak? Is it because your pizza has melted and fused into your underdeveloped, baby dinosaur arm? Tell me! I must know!
