Holiday Horrors, Valentine's Edition: You Give Love A Bad Name

For the next 3 weeks, there's gonna be a twist on our usual Way-Out Wednesday theme! It's called Holiday Horrors: Valentine's Day Edition, where we still show off, run away from, make fun of, get nauseous from, get scared of or just plain old adore a strange and unusual vintage item. Only with a Valentine's Day theme which is, if you ask me, pretty scary enough to begin with. (As is using a 1980's Bon Jovi song in your blog post title.)

Vintage Valentine's Day cards from the 1940's and 50's are one of my most favorite things. Not for their lovely-dovey, sugar sweet "I-can't-live-without-you" sentiment (ptooey) but for their psychotic, obsessive, and deeply disturbing "I-can't-live-without-you" kind of crazy. So to kick off today's theme, I present to you this Vintage 40's Moving Eyes & Tongue Valentine Card, available on Etsy from seller Orbiting Debris:

I had to read the listing before I "got" that the blob with 6 eyes is actually a potato. A potato man, sorry. A potato man who's one obsession-driven step away from installing hidden video cameras in your house, cutting his hair to match yours and boiling your pet bunny. Ain't love grand.

  1. Huh. I thought it was a human heart with eyes all over it.

  2. The first thing I thought was "Why does that potato have so many eyes? Ohhhhh...." And now I wonder who Mary Alice's valentine was. Clearly someone special enough for a creepy lumpy potato. Look how funny the body shape is!

  5. I Love it. Its so bizarre, and Id just love to know who came up with it and how they arrived at the 'this is romantic' we should put it on a valentines day card decision.

  7. I don't think it's creepy at all - I LOVE it! Certainly not something I'd want to give my own Valentine, but a perfect addition to my (small) collection. I noticed that it hasn't sold yet - and am v. tempted to buy it!

  8. This one would probably even send Poe over the edge (he apparently had nightmares about eyes eyes eyes)... I may be having nightmares about eyes eyes eyes now too - thanks, Kim - LOL... and, really, that tongue sure is the icing on an amorphous potato blob cake of creepiness!

  9. The tongue hanging out of Spud's mouth is a lovely finishing touch... Because nothing says I love you quite like 6 creepy eyes staring at you and a lolling tongue!
