Atomic Tuesday: Chickens Roasting On An Open Fire...

...and Jack Frost is nipping at your nose, if you live just about anywhere in the US on this arctic-rific Atomic Tuesday!




Today's pick for Atomic Tuesday is so cool, so mid-century modern in it's wackiness, I thought maybe it was just a really, really good repro. But no. It's the real deal and spec-freaking-tacular. It's almost as if the creator of this said "Hey, it's the 1950's! I'm gonna design a print that is so totally 50's, it'll be crazy!" It's kind of like when someone you know recommends going to a diner that "you're just gonna LOVE" because it's "soooo 50's", and then you get there and the place is SCREAMING cliche, with it's checkerboard floors, repro tin signs of I Love Lucy, and a poster of Elvis, Marilyn and James Dean playing pool on the walls. Because that's exactly what real, "Mom and Pop" type diners in the 1950's looked like. And all the people in the diner were talking about how 50's it was of them to be sitting in a diner, drinking milkshakes and playing Buddy Holly on their tabletop jukeboxes. Riiiight. So today's pick is just like that. Only not.

Awesome, right? First of all, it's PINK, which rules...





...wacky animal wall hangers...Paris print, 'natch...





...hot damn, a fiberglass drum floor lamp (?!)...glasses of iced tea in the holder...magazine rack....





....shish kebabs hanging by the fireplace ...zig-zag wrought iron log stand...and a starburst clock?! Are you kidding me?!...


(OK, I want everything in each picture so far...and a house that looks this iconic, all the time...)





...And of COURSE, the standard rooster. Because it was apparently the poultry of choice in interior design from about 1950 to 1970, since they show up EVERYWHERE and on EVERYTHING. (Well, those and eagles. Just can't escape either one.)

Maybe it's the grey/icy/frigid/hellishly annoying weather or the winter "blahs", or maybe the new year has me inspired to make some overhauls but I've been transitioning into a more minimalistic thing lately. No longer feeling it necessary to hang onto so many "extras" of things, cluttering up my life mojo (a girl only needs so many clocks/lamps/drapes/glasses/so on and so on) that I've been throwing out (well, not "throwing out", but donating/giving away, etc.) things I'm not in love with anymore. And today's vintage pick sort of reflects what I mean, when it comes to decorating the mid-century modern way. While today's pick isn't anything "drop dead" or over the top in any way, it's one thing the MCM fan must have. I've been losing my "atomic mojo" as it were, not being very inspired or motivated by much out there lately- (which seems to be the case with most vintage things- either there's a ton of cool stuff available all at once or a total dry spell)- until I saw this supercool Vintage Atomic Patterned 45 RPM Record Case:





Record cases tend to be a dime a dozen and most of the ones I've come across were pretty bland (like the standard black or olive drab hue), so this one's crazy, Calder-esque pattern and nearly mint condition make it a winner!

Atomic Tuesday: You Light Up My Life...And Creep Me Out A Little.

Today's vintage pick simultaneously makes me full of joy and irks the bejesus outta me. You'll see what I mean...






Bam! (Wow. How Emeril of me. Sorry about that.)

You know what I love about it? Orange, of course! Plus the classic, mid-century modern shape. And the cute, tripod legs (and don't think I can't bang out half a dozen filthy "tripod" jokes, because I totally can.) I've got a thing for vintage lamps like this Vintage 60's MCM Plastic Bubble Lamp so this feeds my obsession nicely. But then there's *something* about it that make me a little skeeved...




There it is. The rational side of me knows it's *supposed* to look like bubbles, but the wackjob side of me thinks the texture of the plastic looks like creepy fish skin. (Have I mentioned I'm terrified of fish? Seriously. Can't swim in water that has fish in it. And yes, I'm aware of my mental fuckuppery, thankyouverymuch.) But mostly it reminds me of Falkor, the Luckdragon- the somehow scaly-yet-furry talking flying dog thing. You know, from the 1984 movie-of-nerdy-kidtastic-awesomeness, The Neverending Story? (Yes, I'm still aware of my mental fuckuppery, thankyouverymuch.)

Atomic Tuesday: White Light/White Heat

Welcome to Atomic Tuesday! Thanks to the few of you who let me know I forgot to do last week's Atomic Tuesday. Say wha?! Where was I, anyway? This somehow can be someone else's fault. Who can I blame? I know. It's those dang aliens again and their abduction tomfoolery. What a bunch of wisenheimers. That surely explains everything. And so, before anyone else gets... a Vulcan Mind Meld...?...or whatever the scifi space nerd term is for getting your memory zapped, let's move on, shall we?

Get a load of this a-MAY-zing Vintage 50's Atomic Bubble Light Novelty Print Dress, inspired by George Nelson's "Bubble Lamp" line for Howard Miller. Miller continued to sell the line through the 1970s, after which the lights were discontinued. It's apparently a vintage 1950s design & fabric, so you can imagine how rare a find this dress is!

Look at that light! This one is the George Nelson Bubble Cluster B-3-740. In 1970, the dealer price on this baby was $50. These lights are the epitome of mid-century modern design and are highly coveted by homeowners trying to get a little slice of 1960 heaven of their own. I know I'd sell my soul to get my hands on one, if I hadn't already sold it half a dozen times already for much lesser material possessions, like a clean pair of socks and a bag of Munchos.




This one is Bubble Lamp H-726. In 1970, the tripod stand cost an extra $4 through the dealer. Those were the days!

Atomic Tuesday

In keeping with the other themed days around this joint, every Tuesday will now be Atomic Tuesday (play 50's B-movie horror flick creepy organ music here), where I'll post a vintage find with an atomic print, pattern or something vaguely related to something atomic. In case you haven't come across this seller yet (and if you dig mid-century modern design, of course) then I demand you check out Atomic Mobiles. She sells these amazing 1950's/1960's Calder-inspired, custom-designed free form mobiles in period-correct colorways, though you can choose any color combo that moves you. They're swell.
